“If your wounds are still open, trust they are doors to an answer, and walk through.” Andrea Gibson

Most of the suffering we face arises from feeling out of sync with the world around us or with the ones we love. Therapy provides a safe and non-judgmental environment to heal and uncover the path to meaningful relationships and self-acceptance. I enjoy working with individuals and relationships of all kinds, improving connection, intimacy and fulfillment.

I trained as a therapist in the heart of San Francisco – land of inclusiveness and sexual exploration. I specialize in working with LGBTQIA clients and expansive models of sexuality, including BDSM and ethical non-monogamy.

I hold a counseling degree in somatic (body integrated) psychotherapy. I address mental health and relational dynamics from the perspective of our embodied selves, utilizing applied neuroscience and mindfulness practices to soften protective defenses and re-inhabit physicality.

I work holistically with individuals and relationships impacted by trauma or chronic pain/illness, helping clients to break unhealthy psychological and physiological patterning and navigate challenging systems of care.

I recognize that unhealthy dynamics can become entrenched between people who care deeply for one other and I help partners return to the connection and vulnerability that they have lost. Utilizing an attachment theory lens, I guide my clients towards reclaiming the space between them as joyful and exciting. I help clients improve their relationships and become their most authentic selves, without shame, secrecy or having to fit into normative expectations.

I have been a therapist since 2008 and have completed over a decade of therapeutic training, including as one of the few AASECT certified sex therapists at a supervisory level in Colorado. I was a staff writer for ChoosingTherapy.com for two years, contributing comprehensive articles on subjects such as open relationships and issues with desire. I have been consulted as a sexuality and relationship expert in over 50 national publications, including Women’s Health, Mind Body Green and The New York Times. Podcasts and articles can be found on my blog.

Bio

I believe it is an honor to engage others in their journey towards meaningful and lasting change. I subscribe to an integrated approach to therapy, applying models such as solution-focused, attachment theory, and structural family therapy. Using insight, empathy and connection I work with my clients to find resolution and healing from past traumas and maladaptive behaviors.

I have helped people through a wide breadth of psychological struggles including depression, anxiety, low self-worth, and partnership discord. In my current private practice I primarily work with individuals who are hoping to make positive, healthy shifts in their lives and relationships. I address negative patterns by reassessing perspectives and fostering self-care. I am comfortable addressing issues of substance abuse in session without stigmatizing my client’s exploration of substance use.

In past clinical roles I have specialized in fostering parenting skills, working with families to effectively manage various psychological problems associated with childhood and teenage acting out by incorporating behavior modification and age appropriate interventions into family therapy.

I was the program director for the adolescent substance use programs at the Denver Family Therapy Center (DFTC) for 8 years. I was also a Multisystemic Therapist (MST) at Synergy, where I addressed adolescent alcohol treatment and drug rehabilitation in family systems.

In addition to clinical work, I have been a Sector Representative for the Drug Free Communities that Care Coalition and was on the Community Youth Leadership Commission (CYLC) Prevention Subcommittee grant writing team. I have taught at the graduate level as Affiliate Faculty for MSU Denver’s Social Work School and University of Denver’s Graduate School of Social Work (GSSW). I have also participated in numerous presentations and community events around adolescent substance use.

I currently work full time as a virtual behavioral health evaluator at UCHealth, establishing level of care for emergency intakes in the UCHealth hospital system and providing employee therapy. I also see a small number of private practice clients on Wednesdays.
